The hundredth tree!

In Waimate a local charitable trust is operating a venture called Bushtown. To raise funds and reesetablish an area of forest they are selling 750 totara trees for $500.00 each. We have paid a deposit to secure tree number 100. This will mark the end of planting on our property, as we have mainly completed the planting we wish to do, and the beginning of Trees for Travellers plantings on the Bushtown site.

During my time in Eniwa City, Hokkaido, Japan, recently I had the privilege of being shown around the Eco-rin Village, farm and meat processing factory of a company called ALEPH.

This company's foremost philosophy is to promote environmental initiatives and they have got a number of closed loop systems operating in their businesses. I was very impressed with all I saw and hope I can use some of the information in my work in Timaru.

As part of the tour they asked me to plant a tree so I have taken the liberty of calling it a Tree for Travellers tree.

As is my pet. I don't care although I can't keep and grow my tree wevery day because I believe Wal and Rusty please grow my tree and other trees for travellers well.

This is my first planting. What a easy work to plant a tree, dig and give some compost and water, that's all. Why I have never done planting although I have an interest about environment issues. I think many people who have an interest about environment issues might think like me. The answer is easy. Just we haven't had the opportunity and knowledge. But now we can do by ourselves. Here is precious place to have an experience of planting. I will plant trees in JAPAN.

The day began magically-sunny skies, light breeze. Although it ended a bit more dreary than a tree planting day should, it gave hope of rain for our wee trees to grow. The process of elimination was difficult-how do you say "no" to a wee tree after all? I'm still not sure what the name of my tree is-Mel Jr. works for now. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful shade of red. I hope it grows to be healthy and does its part to offset my CO2 emissions coming here-as selfish as that sounds. Grow lil' tree, grow!

A rosebud to bring in the springtime with beautiful flowers, along with the promise of life and growth for all things living.

May the growing forest on the Wallis property renew the hope in all of us for a day when everyone can breathe fresh air again.

The redbud tree has special leaves. If you look closely you will see an enlarged area where the heart shaped leaf attaches to the petiole- this senses the sun's location and constantly directs the leaf to get the most solar gain. The first solar panels!

Grow big and tall Robosa Lobster! This tree is for me since I've never planted a tree just for me. I hope to return to Earthwood someday and see my tree and I hope the goat doesn't take too many nibbles ha!ha! This tree is just a little bit of repentance for our enlarged carbon footprit this year. I'm so inspired to build my own house and plant trees near me!

This tree is a gift to the earth and my grandfather. He passed away right before I came to New Zealand. This plant will grow strong and live long in its new home at Earthwood in the garden. I will love the tree, the earth and my grandfather, Robert, forever! Perhaps when the tree is big and strong we Americans will clean up our act and start loving the environment as much as New Zealand.

Katrina decided to add to her previous trees (18, 19 & 49) by planting some understorey. Lester from Matai Nurseries chose a slection of smaller natives including 5 red flax for the front edge.

This cabbage tree was planted to offset my emmissions from plane travel to Hamilton and back for WasteMiNZ conference. I made good contacts, for plastic recycling in particular, and met a lot of people in the industry. My cabbage tree is planted on the NW front of Katrina's patch.

I did a reiki course in Waimate this weekend. Aftre completing that and planting my tree I felt really grounded. It was wonderful to see the house so far along as I helped to make some of the first bricks in February 2006.
